Breakthrough Series:

Backbends with the Yoga Chair

with Daryl Kiang Jun

Saturday, 28 March 2026

2:00pm - 5:00pm at Yoga Story

Tuition: $149

Early Bird 20% off: $119 (ends 14 March 2026)

Overview:

The Breakthrough Series is a collection of mini-workshops designed to help you elevate your practice and explore more advanced poses—safely and progressively. Each session focuses on a specific aspect of yoga, offering in-depth guidance to refine technique, build strength, and deepen understanding. These workshops are ideal for practitioners ready to move beyond the basics and develop more clarity, confidence, and skill.

Breakthrough: Backbends with the Yoga Chair

Backbends can feel exhilarating—but they can also feel intimidating, tight, or uncomfortable when the body doesn’t yet have the right support. In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll use a yoga chair to make backbending more accessible, intelligent, and sustainable.

The chair provides feedback and stability, helping you explore spinal extension with greater body awareness, alignment, and breath control—so you can build strength where it matters, create space where you need it, and reduce the tendency to “dump” into the lower back.

Alongside practical technique, we’ll take time to explore the anatomy of the spine and its supporting systems (core, hips, shoulders, breath mechanics), so you leave with tools you can apply immediately in your regular practice. The workshop will balance energising backbend work with a restorative integration to help release tension and leave you feeling open, grounded, and supported.

Who is this for?

Suitable for beginner to intermediate practitioners, and anyone who wants to:

  • build safer backbend mechanics

  • improve spinal mobility and posture awareness

  • explore backbends with more support and less fear

  • learn how to use props intelligently for long-term progress

(Options and variations will be offered. You do not need to already “have” deep backbends to join.)

Workshop Objectives:

  • Create safer spinal extension through clearer technique and prop support

  • Strengthen the foundations (core, glutes, upper back, shoulders) for stability

  • Improve mobility in the areas that most affect backbends (hips, thoracic spine, shoulders)

  • Refine breath + body awareness to reduce tension and build confidence

  • Integrate with restoration so your nervous system and tissues can absorb the workWorkshop Structure

You can expect a mix of practice, breakdown, and guided exploration, including:

  • Warm-up + preparation for spinal extension

  • Chair-based techniques to support thoracic opening and shoulder mobility

  • Progressive backbend variations using the chair (accessible → deeper options)

  • Key alignment cues to avoid common patterns (e.g., lower back compression, rib flare, shoulder restriction)

  • Restorative chair work + gentle counterposes for integration

Leave with: practical sequences and prop setups you can repeat at home or bring into your regular classes.

Notes

All props are provided. Wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement.

Workshop Overview

In this chapter of the Teaching Yoga series, we focus on one of the most essential skills for yoga teachers: how to structure and lead a clear, balanced 60-minute class from beginning to end.

Many teachers complete their training with a wealth of poses and techniques, yet still feel uncertain when it comes to planning and guiding a full class that flows naturally and responds to the needs of the room. This workshop bridges that gap between theory and real teaching practice.

Through a guided practice, structured learning, and interactive discussion, you will explore how to design and lead classes that reflect your personal teaching voice while remaining accessible to a mixed-level group. We will break down the key elements of a well-crafted class — from setting the tone at the beginning, to building a coherent sequence, to closing the practice in a way that leaves students feeling integrated and supported.

By the end of the session, you will have a clearer framework for planning and delivering a 60-minute class with confidence, clarity, and authenticity.

Workshop Structure:

1. 60-Minute Group Practice

  • Immerse yourself in a mixed-level Hatha class demonstrating effective class flow and practical integration of workshop concepts.

2. Lecture & Discussion: Conducting a 60-Minute All-Level Class

  • Defining and Integrating Your Vision:

    • Explore how your personal practice influences the content you teach.

    • Identify and articulate intentions and themes rooted in your personal values and insights gained through practice.

  • Class Planning:

    • Learn to plan classes from choosing themes to structuring sequences.

    • Construct balanced sequences progressing from warm-ups to challenging asanas and a calming cooldown.

  • Opening, Tone & Pace:

    • Techniques for engaging and preparing students effectively.

    • Adjust tone and pace to match class themes and student needs.

  • Class Management:

    • Observe and respond to class dynamics and individual student needs.

    • Strategies for demonstration and adjustments, with an emphasis on safety and consent.

  • Closing a Class:

BEYOND TRAINING: TEACHING THAT LASTS

A community session for yoga teachers navigating

what comes after training

with Cora Lee & Remy Trouche

Saturday, 7 February 2026

2:00pm - 5:00pm at Yoga Story

If you missed this fantastic event and are interested in attending future editions,

please use the application form below

About the event

This is a small, application-based community gathering for yoga teachers and aspiring teachers who are navigating what comes after teacher training.

Many teachers complete their 200h or 300h feeling inspired, yet unsure how to translate what they’ve learned into sustainable, embodied, and effective teaching. Others have been teaching for some time and feel the need to refine their approach, reconnect with clarity, or find support beyond sequences and techniques.

Through guided practice, conversation, and shared experience, this session explores what supports longevity in teaching — beyond cue lists, formats, and performance. The focus is on how teaching evolves over time, how confidence develops through experience, and what helps teaching remain intelligent, responsive, and human.

This session also provides context around how Yoga Story supports teachers at different stages of their journey — formally and informally — including teacher practice, supported community teaching opportunities, and longer-form teacher development pathways such as the Teaching Yoga Series, Chair Yoga CET, and Sound Healing Training.

There is no expectation to already know where you are heading. This is a space to reflect, listen, and orient yourself — not to perform or decide anything on the day.

Who this event is for

  • Teachers who have recently completed a 200h or 300h YTT

  • Teachers who are currently teaching and seeking refinement or sustainability

  • Certified teachers who are not teaching but considering returning

  • Aspiring teachers planning their first YTT

Application & Commitment credit

  • This is an application-based event with limited spots.

  • Selected participants will be asked to confirm their place with a $20 commitment credit, which will be returned as a Yoga Story class credit upon attendance.

  • The commitment credit helps us keep the group intentional and ensures that everyone who registers is able to attend.

The way you move, the space you hold, and the energy you project can enhance the connection between you and your students, helping them to connect more profoundly with themselves.

In “The Power of Body Language” workshop -the fourth Chapter of the Teaching Yoga series- Cora will guide you on how to harness the power of non-verbal communication to elevate your teaching as a yoga teacher. FIVE ELEMENTS RETREAT: FIRE

with Stephanie Bovis

Saturday, 26 October 2024

2.30pm - 5:00pm at Yoga Story

- Sold Out -

Overview:

Welcome to Five Elements Retreat Series, at Yoga Story, with Stephanie Bovis. Each session, we'll delve into the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space, exploring their profound impact on our body and mind. Drawing from the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Osho’s Active Meditations, and a blend of yin and yang yoga practices, this 2 ½ hour retreat is designed to leave you feeling balanced, restored, and enriched with a deeper understanding of the five elements that shape our existence. Gift yourself this moment of reflection and rejuvenation in the serene ambiance of Yoga Story.

FIRE Element Retreat

The nature of fire is one of transformation. Its magical quality allows for us to see the joy and creativity within ourselves, and the element is often used in many devotional practices. As we know, when we have too much fire in our systems, we can become irrational and aggressive. Left unmanaged, it can lead to the notorious burn out we may all experience at some point.

The retreat begins with a short movement session to awaken the body and remove stagnant energy. Once we are awake in our bodies, we will then explore a beautiful devotional active meditation, one that takes you right to the heart space. You will leave feeling more connected, not only to yourself, but will cultivate an immense gratitude to our Mother Earth and Father Sky.

The session will end with a yin yoga and meditation class using the meridian theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will move through poses that will awaken the Heart and Small Intestine meridians, so that “qi” can flow and nourish the organs of the Fire element.

This retreat with the elements will be a true gift to yourself. An opportunity to refill your cup, and move through life feeling a little bit better.

FIVE ELEMENTS RETREAT: WATER

with Stephanie Bovis

Saturday, 28 September 2024

2.30pm - 5:00pm at Yoga Story

WATER Element Retreat

When we explore the ways water is expressed in nature, we see that it shape-shifts and flows to the deepest depths where it eventually pools. When a lake is peaceful, it mirrors anything that shows itself clearly. The Water element asks us to go deep and reflect on our emotions and feelings. It asks us to be adaptable so that we can move through life with a sense of ease and flow. When we are out of balance, we feel stagnant and fearful, critical of our own abilities.

The retreat begins with a short movement session to awaken the body and remove stagnant energy. Once we are awake in our bodies, we will then explore a shake and flow meditation, which will spark creative movement and expression. It is a fantastic method to release tension held in our bodies so that we can find stillness in our minds.

The session will end with a yin yoga and meditation class using the meridian theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine. We will move through poses that will awaken the Kidney and Bladder meridians, promoting the flow of blood and "qi" to nourish the organs associated with the Water element.

This retreat is a true gift to yourself — a chance to replenish your energy and navigate life with renewed clarity and ease.
